I like the website and the ability to talk openly about Chico. I will be checking this often. Thanks Chatty Cathy for a place to go.

I don't live in Chico, but go thru there from time to time on my way to Mineral Wells. What's up with the signs at that one house just past the railroad tracks, before you get to the high school? They've been there for ages, are starting to fade, but I never knew the story.

P.S. Y'all have a cool skate park.

I have a little issue that I've been pondering for quite some time. I really appreciate the teachers in our school who actually try to understand that some parents are single, they work and they have more than 1 child to take care of. On the flip side, you have some who think that all you have to do at night is cater to the school. I'm not able to attend meetings and such during the middle of the day-as they are always planned-does that make me a bad mother? Of course it doesn't. Just realize that just because some of us aren't able to keep up with everything in our lives, does not mean we don't support and love our kids. I believe they should be learning in school, if I wanted to do their homework or teach them, I'd probably homeschool them. Thanks for the vent!

Hello,
Just passing through and found this site very interesting. I don't live in Chico but very close. I wanted to respond concerning the post about the 'signs' in the front yard. I saw a girl in the front yard one day passing through and I stopped to ask her about the signs. She had said that her little sister had a health problem that the school knew about, but yet they made her participate in P.E. She collasped on the track while running and had to have surgery, therefore they blamed the school and tried to sue but I think they had failed. Thats when the signs began from what she had told me. Hope this information helps your curiosity on the topic.

I'm glad you got to vent that. Most people don't understand how hard it is for a single parent. It is very overwhelming at times and can be hard to meet all the needs of our children, home and work all in the same day. You spend most of your time playing catch up and you don't have a partner to share the work load with.

You're not alone......

I agree Chico teachers have an enormous problem with being judgemental and selfish towards parents and there needs. I think there is some great teachers and staff up there but they to not take into account what parents have to do daily. Parent meetings during the day, twenty minutes waiting in line to pick up your kids, teachers not showing up during school hour class meetings because it's there break time, and the gossiping about parents up there is horrible! I believe the discipline the new principal is showing is much needed but she needs to extend it evenly accross the board and tale the parents-taxpayers in to mind also and reign a few of those teachers in line.

This was from Principal Martin in the CMS Dragon Drama Newspaper in the Principal's Corner part:

I love my job; I'm very proud to call Chico home and raise my kids here, but the one thing that has bothered me since I walked in the door here at Chico Middle School is the lack of PRIDE my students and some of their parents have about Chico and its schools. I have taught all over the state of Texas, and there are some of the best teachers here in Chico. The next time someone says, "Duh, I'm
from Chico, tell them to move to Alvord!
I just wanted to say, "Duh, there's been a lot move to Alvord-What does that tell you?"

maybe mr. Martin should move to alvord.

MAYBE MR. MARTIN HAS BEEN HANGING OUT WITH THE HIGH SCHOOL BOYS. READING THROUGH THE POSTS ON HERE MAYBE HE HOOKED THE HIGH SCHOOL BOYS UP WITH SOME OF HIS STUDENTS.. HAHAHAHA I DONT KNOW ANY OF THESE PEOPLE AND AM NOT FROM CHICO BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE YALL HAVE YALLS HANDS FULL OVER THERE.

I have been trying to decide if I should remove the above comment.
Instead I've decided to comment on this. I did say a place you are free to speak.

I think this is a pretty vicious statement. Mr. Martin is not this kind of person. I have only known him to care about his students. Nor would he agree with the behavior of these kids.
He is a parent just like us. Even if you don't like or agree with him, you have to admit that comment has gone to far. There is nothing funny about it at ALL.
I do believe this person is someone close to our area or who lives in Chico and may have a bone to pick with him.
A lot of changes are happening in our schools and it is not always easy to adjust (which for me too) but that is no excuse to personal attack him in that way.
I want people to speak freely here, that was the point of this blog, but that is a little to much freedom.
I have spoke to some people who know I run this blog and they think I should delete the comment.
I believe this is a good example how not to behave.

I would like everyone to let me know if I should delete this?

Very innapropriate comment but that's how some people are. Small people say small things wether there meant in humor or not. But if we start regulating comments then this isn't much of an open forumn of discussion. Where does the line on that end?

Anonymous said...

I would have to agree with it being an inappropriate comment, but true, where else can you have an open forum of discussion?
I would like to say that there are always things that us as parents do not agree with. But unless you personally know these people, there's no reason to personally attack them. I have to say that I have known Mr. Martin for several years now and I think he's a down-to-earth man with morals that he attempts to instill in our children and his own. I know one thing-we could have it a lot worse. I say cheers to Mr. Martin and his staff at the Middle School.

just heard a rumor that one of the elemetary school teachers is quitting to go to work at another school at xmas time and there combining the students with an existing class. wouldnt it be much better to just do this now and get it over with and get rid of the teacher? also how can a teacher get out of her contract and do this to a group of young kids?

Can anyone tell me where the Old Mount House is located? What is the history of the house? When was it built? I recently moved to the area and would like to know about the history of Chico.

R. C. Mount House

From Chico, take Mount Street 1 mile north.

A surveyor, part-time Methodist preacher, and Wise County's first tax assessor-collector, R. C. Mount (1826-97) began this structure in 1872 to house his large family. Built of rock that Mount and his sons hauled by wagon from Palo Pinto County, the original 2-story section was completed in 1874. Contractor H. A. Saye of Amarillo enlarged the house in 1890, and further remodeling was done in 1920. The property is still owned by the Mount family.

That does not seem to be the house I was thinking it was. This one too is on Mount Street about a mile and a half from town on the left. This is a large white two story frame home that seems to be abandonded. What is the history of that home? It seems to have been a lovely home in it's better days. I was just curious why it was abandoned.

I think that's the same one. Maybe not all of it is stone, I can't remember. I do know that I was there as a kid and I was pretty freaked out by the feelings in that upstairs room! I've heard of the hauntings there, but can't remember the details. Probably abandoned because it's so old and maybe people are scared to live there.

On the right under links, click Ghost Tales of Chico. This is about the Mount house.

The directions to the Mount house:
Take the road the runs next to the Subway until it dead ends and take a left, the house is on your left.
This the house that Anonymous is talking about.
It has a Historical Marker.

Wow, that's definitely the stairwell I remember. The people that lived there were friends of my parents about 26 yrs ago and the kids room was upstairs. I hated playing up there because it was creepy but there were a bunch of us kids and I didn't want to be a baby about it. I remember hearing tales about it, but the one I remember most was that they couldn't open the door to the stairs, it was like it was nailed shut. Yet, the next morning the door would be wide open. Gives me the creeps thinking about it.
