Schools That Failed The AYP Standards

I thought this was interesting.
Chico did pretty well considering the other schools on this list failed a least two subjects.
Math is a problem and needs to be addressed.

Chico High School missed AYP standards because of performance in math.

"We knew based on our TAKS scores last year that we needed to emphasize math and science instruction," said Mike Jones, Chico superintendent. "Those continue to be focal points of interest for us. We've purchased some additional resources to bolster our kids' strengths."

Jones said that another issue is encouraging students in the 10th grade to do well on their tests, even though the 10th grade TAKS test does not affect promotion or graduation.

"That's a problem we have statewide," Jones said. "Sophomores sometimes don't give as much effort as they did when they were eighth graders or that they will put forth when they are juniors. We have to insist and stress to our kids that these tests are measures that the government uses to show if the school is making enough progress."

Chico's students scored the highest on the SAT exam with 519.38 in verbal and 515 on math with 16 people taking the test. High school counselor Barbara Barkley said these scores are definitely up from previous years, and they try to encourage as many students as possible to take the exams. These scores place Chico above the state level and the national verbal score but just below the national math score.

Chico also fell right below the state and national ACT levels. Twenty-four Chico students took the ACT exam with an average score of 20.
